QHBA & CFWD to hold regional event to promote youth working in skilled trades.

Belleville, ON, Nov 5, 2018.

Quinte Home Builders’ Association and Centre for Workforce Development have partnered to host an experiential learning day for school boards across the Region. The Quinte Careers in Construction Day will be held on Nov 15, 2018 at the QSWC’s Mackay Arena in Belleville. The event, which is closed to the public, will give students one to one discussion time with mentors from the industry and feature eight activity stations with a focus on the skills required for a specific trade or role within the construction sector. The event will represent trades and careers including, carpentry/framing, plumbing, building, gas fitting, municipal planning and health & safety.
“Building our industry’s future.”
“The intention of the event is to give students in Grades 10-12, from across the Region, hands-on learning and interactive discussion with existing trades people in various areas of the construction industry”, says Ruth Estwick, QHBA’s Executive Officer. “We recognize that these youth are the future of our industry and we want them to see the opportunities available to them in the Quinte Region through a career in construction.”
The QHBA is the voice of the residential construction industry representing over 150 members across the Quinte Region. Together, we continue to work with stakeholders and partners on areas that are important to the future of our industry. We are the organizers of the Quinte Home & Lifestyle Show and our industry contributes significantly to driving the local economy.
“Vast Opportunities in Construction ”
The local construction industry has been growing year over year, creating great job opportunities within it. In the Quinte Region, this industry ranks in the top five businesses that make up all the sectors and accounts for 7%-10% of the local labour force. Yet they are struggling to fill the vacancies they have. Informative and interactive events such as the Construction Trades Day engages and educates our youth of the vast possibilities a skilled trades career can provide.
The Centre for Workforce Development is your expert on the local labour market in Hastings, Prince Edward and Lennox & Addington Counties. Funded in part by the Government of Canada and Government of Ontario, it operates as one of 26 non-profit Boards across Ontario with a focus on local labour market research and workforce development.
